Minister of Science visits NOVA LINCS
“A great experience! For those who love science, its a way of getting to kmow how things work. And for those who do not find much to do on summer holidays, its good to spend time learning something useful” says Leonor, age 14, eight grader at Olivais Secondary School, Lisbon.
The young students who, during this week, attended the internships program Ciência Viva no Laboratório of the Department of Informatics of FCT NOVA and NOVA LINCS NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics, under the program Ciência Viva no Laboratório, received today the visit of Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Rosalia Vargas, President of the Agência Ciência Viva, and delegates.
This year we presented as a novelty the “Começar Cedo” internship for students in the third cycle of Basic Education, through the pilot program “Começar Cedo”, under the motto “A program of one week internships, entirely devoted to Digital Technologies and Skills, framed by responsible practices for scientific research and innovation, including gender balance. ”
The “Começar Cedo” internships are an introduction to the various areas of computing through hands-on programming. The 8th and 9th grade students have the opportunity to explain and demonstrate to all the Minister’s delegation, all they have learned during the internship, from small computer games, to artificial intelligence, robotics, internet of things and computer security, a different theme every day!
NOVA LINCS and DI FCT NOVA have been offering one week internships to secondary school students during the summer break, where they
learn principles of Informatics and Computer Science applied to the construction of a real computer game.
The activity was implemented by NOVA LINCS researchers and postdocs, as well as by faculty, master and PhD students of the Department Informatics of FCT NOVA.
The program Ciência Viva no Laboratório Ocupação Científica de Jovens nas Férias, a national initiative established 1996, aims to bring the youngest students closer to the reality of scientific and technological research in several areas of knowledge.
