Processing Tomographic Data with GPUs
CITI TOMO-GPU project team contributes with basic building blocks for processing and visualizing data obtained by tomography. CITI team developed an advanced problem solving environment (PSE) suitable for processing tomographic data acquired from samples of composite materials. This PSE is particularly designed to be run in desktop computers and to take advantage both of general purpose multi-core processors and General Purpose Graphical Processing Units (GPGPU).
While initially target for the visualization of composite material structures, the techniques developped find application in others fields. An example involved the visualization of the morphology of dinosaur eggshell samples collected in Portigal, as reported in a recent Nature paper [1].
The project TOMO-GPU is led by CITI Computer Systems Researcher Pedro Medeiros in collaboration with CENIMAT researcher Alexandre Velhinho.
