MobiWorkFlow – A Mobile and Adaptive Workflow Management System

The MobiWorkFlow Project aims to study and propose new support foundations and distributed system solutions for a new generation of workflow management systems (WfMS).

These systems must scale beyond the internetworking stationary infrastructures of organizations, supporting users interacting from mobile computer devices and assisting those users in the development and performance of mobile-based tasks. The project is particularly focused on what we call dynamic and mobile workflow management support, not managing only repetitive or well-known organizational processes, in which, there is a clear separation between the process definition phase and the process enactment phase. At the same time, these systems must give support for multi-participated and evolving work tasks, in which, different activities are performed and refined by mobile workers, in a collaborative distributed environment.

The MobiWorkFlow Project aims to study and propose new support foundations and a distributed system architecture and its components to define, manage and enact dynamic workflows composed by mobile tasks. The project is focused in the concurrent support of dynamic process definition and worklow process enactment mechanisms.

The main research directions focused by the project are:

Proposition of a scalable model reference and distributed architecture for DM-WfMS;

Proposition of a Dynamic Process Definition Language (DPDL) that fits into the previous model, allowing process definition and process coordination refinment facilities, at the same time that the process tasks evolve.

Exploring system support strategies for mobile transactions and parttialy disconnected work task (in the enactment support)

Inclusion of group-oriented collaboration facilities and task context awareness control mechanisms
