information and communication technologies have the potential to change
computational interfaces and our relationship with computational appliances.
Several devices can be seamlessly integrated into the world and almost
disappear from the user´s attention, as envisioned by Mark Weiser in 1991.
The paradigm of ubiquitous computing brought out concepts such as smart
objects that can be embedded in our surrounding environments, sensing our
presence and actions and reacting accordingly.
Augmented environments intuitively provide users with additional contextual
information. Research is being conducted in order to achieve augmented
environments that are able to sense the surroundings or even the users
emotional state. This contextual information will then be employed to
determine the appropriate data being supplied to the users, as well as the
most suitable procedure of doing so. Augmented environments should not be
intrusive, should adapt their response to the contextual situation and to
the users behaviour and give users the right information at the right time.
This talk will give a short overview of several projects focusing on the
development of augmented environments.
