Cyber-Physical Systems: challenges and directions for research

The systems we design are of an ever increasing complexity. This complexity is increasingly due to the integration of multiple physical energy flows (thermal, mechanical, hydraulical, electrical, …), information (including control), and distributed/networked realizations. The latter in particular introduces radical changes in system structure (i.e., the dimension of the state-space). Such complex systems are now often referred to as Cyber-Physical Systems. Their study is the focus of large national and international research programmes.

Experience shows that understanding and designing different components and views of such systems in isolation does not scale. Rather, an integrated modelling framework is required. At the heart of such a framework is modelling language engineering, integrating various modelling formalisms.

This presentation will introduce CPS challenges as well as some research avenues to explore.
