ABOUT
NOVA LINCS is a leading research lab in the area of Computer Science and Informatics, hosted at the Departamento de Informática – NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA – Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, a pioneering national institution in the field. NOVA LINCS also integrates branches at Universidade de Évora, Universidade da Beira Interior, ISEL and Universidade da Madeira. NOVA LINCS integrates four research groups, providing a broad coverage of Computer Science and Informatics research: Computer Systems; Knowledge-Based Systems; Multimodal Systems and Software Systems. NOVA LINCS research team currently engages 65 integrated members and 27 associated members. - NOVA LINCS was awarded the highest research rating (Excellent) by the last two Portuguese National Science Foundation evaluation exercise (2013 & 2018).
MISSION
NOVA LINCS research roadmap targets the theme “Science and Engineering for the Global Software Ecosystem”. It unfolds in two lab-wide interacting streams: one on creating new principles and engineering for emergent computing and software ecosystems, another on developing innovative IT powered solutions for technical, societal, and interdisciplinary fields. We build on our portfolio of research achievements, on our ability to balance fundamental, applied research and problem driven innovation, and on thriving interactions with diverse external technology and knowledge users.
We are internationally known for high impact contributions and technological solutions in topics such as distributed data management, software modelling and requirements engineering, programming and verification languages, tools, and systems, knowledge representation and automated reasoning, multimedia information processing and interaction.

ORGANIZATION
NOVA LINCS integrates four research groups, providing a broad coverage of Computer Science and Informatics research: Computer Systems; Knowledge-Based Systems; Multimodal Systems and Software Systems.
• CS - Computer Systems • KBS - Knowledge-Based Systems • MMS - Multimodal Systems • SS - Software Systems
Each research group is led by a Principal Investigator (PI), responsible for steering, promoting, and coaching the general activities within the group and their alignment with the strategic program, in coordination with NOVA LINCS Board and Steering Committee.
The research roadmap of NOVA LINCS is focused on a running strategic program which defines a coordinated set of R&D activities of pluriannual duration, seeking results of high scientific and technological impact, developed within national and international academic and societal partnerships, with relevant research institutions and companies.
Within and across research groups, research activities widely span the laboratory in flexible and synergistic ways so as to better suit the strategic program objectives. To promote agility, activities are often organized in lightweight teams, involving members from several research groups to address the unit research objectives that require interdisciplinary skills in computer science and beyond.
